If there were no flashing against these walls water could slowly drip into the crevice between the wall and the roof and potentially into the home. That lip is then set into a reglet or groove in this case cut into the mortar joint of the brick wall above. Except where walls are brick the vertical part of the sidewall flashing should extend up behind the exterior wall covering just like with headwalls. Continuity of the control layers between roofs and walls is the whole enchilada.

It is because the intersection between the roof and the exterior wall covering is not properly installed and flashed. To install the roof wall flashing above the builder bent the top edge of the flashing into a 90 degree lip about 2 cm in width. A sidewall is a junction between a wall and a sloped portion of a roof. This oversight has been going on for years and costing property owners many thousands of dollars.
