Our tile guy asked us to make a plywood piece the exact size and shape of the hood. Place pieces of masking tape over the areas where the holes will be drilled. The order would be to install the hood first. Range hoods are a necessity in any kitchen.

If backsplash needs to tuck up under the range hood might be able to do that if a spacer is left in place when it is installed if the backsplash is a panel product with no joint behind the hood otherwise should be done before the hood install like if tile and needs to cover the wall up behind the hood. The hood would be mounted to the plywood and the tile would go up to it. I am thinking i should install the range hood first and then the backsplash. While the backsplash and hood have a contemporary style they blend in great with this historic home.

A properly installed range hood will vent hot air and cooking odors outside as well as help keep kitchen surfaces free of grease. I m not sure why this is better than just tiling the wall and putting the hood over the top of it.
